The way he treats women working at the sponsor booths at conferences is deplorable. Lots of embracing and sweetheart, and honey and pretty much anything else that conveys that she is simply a "cute girl in a booth" and nothing more. I'm regretting not saying anything then and just chalking it up to the fact that he was "old school Hollywood" but since this incident that I could not ignore, I have heard other stories that make what I saw pretty tame in comparison. Glad you did some digging and showed us his true colors. He is not what our community of dads represents.

Re: Travel Tips for PR Pros On the Go

Also, nothing gives you the warm fuzzy feeling of security more than a portable cell phone battery/charger thing.

Re: Quick and Creative: Why Quinoa Makes the Perfectly Packed Lunch

I see many parallels between the rise of kale and the rise of quinoa. Both of their meteoric rises were facilitated by social media. Because I hate kale with every ounce of my being, I assumed I would also hate quinoa. I tried it last year just so I could tweet something nasty about it. I have to admit, it ain't half bad. Unrelated, woohoo for Boston!! I subject my family to that for dinner all the time. They will eat it, and they will like it, and they will all act like the proper Bostonians that they are (or should be!). Also, that pork thing? Never heard of it but now I feel like I have been granted a quest!!

Re: Happy 20th Anniversary, Saveur!

Nothing beats thumbing through a magazine and drooling over the food (says the digital strategist).

Re: So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish

Thank you! Made no sense because I thought he loved his dog. Cartoon fame does crazy things to people. Also, the original text said Great Pimpkin (intentional misspelling) but got edited with good intentions because I was probably too subtle with that intentional misspelling.

Re: New Year's Resolution: Learn How to Throw a Punch

Having grown up as the only Asian kid in a working class Irish town and getting beat up daily (didn't help that I was smart and a wuss), I carried a lot of baggage with me into college. I vowed never to shy away from a fight ever again. That's where I began my path into fight sports. Karate, MMA, Muay Thai, wrestling, boxing... anything that required me to take a beating and dish it back. That was 20+ years ago (and I did it up until last year). Like you said, there's not much to prove anymore (and truth be told, you'll probably end up getting shot anyway), and aside from inside the ring, I've never gotten into a fight. But the confidence that you gain knowing that you can take a hit (figuratively and literally) and dish it right back is the best thing to stick in your back pocket.

Re: Best Practices: Apologies and Non-Apologies

They/we are influential and can shape opinion, but we are very different from media. We sell ourselves (our viewpoints, our insights, our POV, but most importantly, OURSELVES) and we do it sometimes within the context of information. Media exists for a very different reason. Media sells information, and it is done through the entity. When the public/industry misses that distinction, a lot of shit happens. Bloggers and media are all important parts of the conversation mix, but they are distinct and their motivations are different. This is why a blogger can say "pay me $2000 and I will blog about you" while the NYT can't (without catching shit for it). Personality vs Information. For most cases, and in practice, they are interchangeable, but when bloggers use the title of "media" recklessly, it's often embarrassing.

Re: Best Practices: Apologies and Non-Apologies

Bloggers are not media.

Re: Dear Mommy Blogger

Bravo! As a blogger who recently turned to the "dark side" by working for a PR company, I see the dynamics you are talking about. Often, the client needs our teams to send out a huge number of pitches. Luckily, since I am a blogger, our account teams can send me lists of moms and dads and I can go yay or nay on the fly because I know this person's kids are too young, or this person lives in a cold climate etc etc. But your average account executive? They don't know this. And yes, he/she could "take a few minutes" to find that out but you know what? Multiply "a few minutes" by a few dozen bloggers and you're presenting your client with thousands of dollars-worth of billable time for what? A better list? Good luck getting your contract renewed.

Like most things, the blogger/brand/agency relationship is an ecosystem. All in all, it works ok. But every once in a while, mistakes happen, people get insulted, and ruckus is raised. My advice to both sides of the game is to just chill out. It's just a pitch. The ones who are bad at it will fall to the wayside, just like the weak species in an ecosystem. The strong ones who can adapt to their surroundings (be it a blogger, brand or agency) will thrive. Be an adapter. Go with the flow. This ecosystem was here before you started, and will remain long after you're gone. I'm saying this to all stakeholders, not just the bloggers.

Re: Episode 042: Guard Your Nuts And Hide Your Guts

Nice hanging out with you guys just now.
