Still looks like a good deal. Know anything like this for French?

Re: Running very large scripts is not a strong area for SSMS

Thanks. I will have to look into this. When I hit this error, I was able to get around it sometimes by shrinking TempDB. This was on my laptop. Other times, I had to break up the script.

Re: Why I Decided to Give The Pimsleur Approach A Second Chance

Yes. Luckily my old library had a decent selection of Pimsleur languages. I did all three volumes of French during my commute to work. You wont get a massive vocabulary; but, you will be very comfortable with the vocabulary you acquire.

I am a little surprised new online courses have not put more price pressure on them. They do seem to be a premium priced product. You can get more vocabulary with audio much cheaper through Assimil. But, they still fill the niche of mobile learning very well.

Re: Data Modeling in Agile Development: One Data Modeler’s Experience

I follow the same method. After a request/story, we will usually white board some high level relationships. Then I can model for initial tables. Your willingness to share the ups and downs of language learning in addition to the advice of the process is refreshing. Your casual tone and openness hits home with what I and probably a lot of learners go through. I hope you feel better soon.

Re: The Spaced Repetition Snowball: How to become overwhelmed by learning vocabulary

I recently did a similar experiment and upped two decks to 40 new cards per day. I think high education is long overdue for a major overhaul. I have yet to use my college art class personally or professionally. Yet, that was mandatory. The Bio class was nicknamed Back Test 101 because you needed back tests to get through it. So, did students get more out of these mandatory classes. I doubt it.

The quotes in the article show students ignorance. Higher education should help eliminate ignorance. Which classes should be mandatory can debated ad nauseam.

Re: Beliefs of American University Students Towards Foreign Language Requirements and Textbooks

I graduated in the 80s with a BS in Computer Science. Although I took 2 years of Spanish in HS as part of the college prep track. A foreign language was not required for graduation with a BS degree.

Now I wish it was. Is it directly related to working in IT. No. But, I have been in meetings where I am the only American in the room. Learning about the language and culture of my coworkers builds a better team. And, just like sports, the best team is usually the most successful.

It is a great ice breaker when you can say a few words in someones native language. I have had long conversations with people who barely say hello to most people in the office. So even my limited language abilities opens doors.

Re: Giveaway: Employees First, Customers Second

I hope this is much better then "The Customer Comes Second" by Hal Rosenbluth.

Re: Giveaway: Employees First, Customers Second

I’m an employee and I’m first.

Re: Do Women Make The Best Project Managers?

I worked for many female project managers when I started in the 90s. Which seems pretty rare considering the number of females in IT at the time. So I learned a lot about the soft skills needed.
