I remember the Super Shift in an old Mitsubishi Colt my grandfather had. While 4x2 is the accurate way to describe it, the way he used it was by using the second lever basically as a fifth gear. Once he got it up to fourth and hit the desired speed, he switched the second lever from "Power" to "Economy" and off we went.

Here's a quick primer. This predates the occupational division of the Korean Peninsula by the Allies at the end of WW2 - like how Germany was divided - and the Korean War of 1950-2018. Yes, that's right. It just formally ended a few months ago. The last 65 years was just an armistice, a cease-fire. Imperial Japan occupied the Korean Peninsula decades prior to the start of WW2, annexing it and making it a protectorate. They killed thousands of Koreans for any sort of dissent, any other reason you can think of and often just out of pure spite. During WW2, they used the Korean countryside as their own proverbial breadbasket, and thousands died of malnutrition while the rice they grew was sent off to feed Japanese soldiers. Thousands of men were kidnapped and forced to serve as slave labor for the army. Thousands of women were kidnapped and forced to serve as prostitutes - they used the term "comfort women" - for Japanese soldiers. Neither had a very high survival rate. And to this day the Japanese government has never apologized for the atrocities they committed during the war.

This seems almost trivial to you, but to them it represents every horror their parents, grandparents and so on somehow managed to endure. You can't just snap your fingers and make that kind of pain go away.
