Wow! That is scary.
Looking at the median income (from Wikipedia), and adding the employer contribution on to the income, that means health insurance is about 24% of the employees remuneration for a family.

If that money was went directly to single payer, then people's impression of paying one of the highest tax rates in the world would be pretty accurate.
(Note that redirecting the money to a single payer "scheme" would result in no change to the employees usable income.)

The average tax return is 13.5%, but total taxes are reported as over 39%. Adding Healthcare insurance premiums to this effectively puts the US with the few countries with the highest taxes in the world, with 63% of income going on tax and health insurance.

No wonder most of the world prefers single payer.
The disadvantage of single payer, is those who with the highest incomes won't be able to get out of paying so easily.

I realise these generalisations are inaccurate, as the average will be skewed higher than the median, and the figures cannot be added together.
It's a good thing Sen. John Barrasso is asking the CBO to analyse the cost.

Maybe helmets should be compulsory if you wear lycra and race, to reduce damage from high-speed crashes
Maybe helmets should be compulsory while walking on uneven pavements, to reduce damage when tripping.
Maybe helmets should be compulsory if you're wearing a seatbelt, to reduce damage if in an accident while driving.

Or maybe we already do enough to reduce the risk to an acceptable level by having helmets optional.

As a non-American I'm interested to know what percentage of each person's income package currently goes on health insurance. Do people know exactly how much their employer's contribution is?

I love baking bread. I had a go at making sourdough last year, but wasn't happy with the result. I have a friend who's been working with it recently and she has promised to bring a portion of starter over next time she visits.
