They are bad people, of course. The whole event was provocative, of course. They deserve no sympathy for what happened to them, of course.

But that doesn't mean that they can't be victims of crimes. The police have to treat someone who was attacked as a victim. (Which, given that event, is certainly possible.) Alt-right idiots are not outlaws who can be assaulted by anyone with impunity.
