Just so you're aware, the answer is a whole lot, but it's not important. Leave it at this, I've done what you've suggested, but I've also done a lot of things that most people would consider dangerous; I do it because I want to and I've paid a lot of money; none of it has ever been from the tax-payers. God rest the souls of the people on Rainier; they lived before they died. Like me, their obituary will say more than "I went to WalMart".

Re: 6 missing Mount Rainier climbers believed to have fallen

Far more people die drinking and driving, swimming at the beach, etc. Do you criticize them and feel the same about people who are sent in to save them? The point is, when my time is up, I don't want my obituary to read "I went to WalMart".

Re: 6 missing Mount Rainier climbers believed to have fallen

I was one of those that didn't make it to the summit (twice), but did spend the night at 10K at Camp Muir. The key is not whether we post a particular document on the door of a school; the key is whether or not we support the children of our community; regardless of race, creed or color.

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - Town hall meeting to duscuss future of school

I drove down and through the area yesterday. The building is in terrible disrepair. My guess is the town could tear it down and build a new community center for what it would cost to refurbish the old high school. At the same time, doesn't Sylacauga already have a community center? The consensus here, as well as in the responses to the editorial, is that this is not a good area of town in terms of crime and drugs.

Sylacauga - please don't waste your tax-payers' money. Demolish this haven for drugs and crimes and invest your money appropriately.

On a positive note, I drove past the REEF plant while I was there and it didn't smell!

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - Town hall meeting good for planning

BG - it's worse than that. It seems it's a dilapidated building in an area of town where there are higher than average levels of crime. While there are grand and glorious plans offered to make it into a social venue, would the majority of Sylacauga residents venture there given the "thugs" that Patriot describes and some of the other references to crime posted by respondents to the Daily Home's editorial?

I will say, however, that it could be turned into a charter school but that money would need to come from private sources; your city doesn't seem to have the money to deal with the problems it has, much less take on new ones!

This has the looks of a "hot topic"! I may just drive down to the meeting in Sylacauga on Monday just to see what happens! If you go, make yourself known and I will come up and introduce myself!

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - It's showtime!

I, for one, apologize to you sir!

The rumors and muttering seemed to indicate that it was some type of business permit; that would have reflected the "business as usual" environment that seems to define Sylacauga politics.

You're 100% right, not a single person should have been in that theater without the appropriate approvals and permits for fire equipment, etc.

Thank you for the good work in your community.

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - It's showtime!

I drove down and attended the theater last night; not bad at all! I really enjoyed myself!

I heard several people talking about the "permit" issue and have read about it today; that seems to be just typical Sylacauga politics. It is very interesting to me. Parts of your fair city look like a dump. As I have pointed out before, the tire store (or whatever it claims to be) at the north end of town, the appalling nature of some of the main thoroughfares, the plethora of empty buildings, etc, are tremendous eyesores. Despite those issues, the city is busy worried about theater permits! What's wrong Sylacauga government? Will those aforementioned people stand up and tell you to go to hell, while the new entrepreuer cannot afford to do such?

It is apparent your government is not working for you, Sylacauga! When are you going to hold them accountable? They are willing to harrass people who are trying to bring business and entertainment to your community but will not stand up against what is wrong! Do you think other entertainment and food establishments are going to come to your area if they have to put up with this type of "Boss Tweed" politics (actually Boss Hogg might be a more apt description as they remind me of the Dukes of Hazzard!) Do you have a bunch of wimps in your government or are they accepting money under the table?

You fine people need to stand up and yell, "To hell with our mayor and city council; we are taking over!" It is apparent from this, and other recent events, that they simply do not care about you!

Sincerely,

Bosley "Give me liberty or give me death!" I stopped for gasoline and asked the clerk how many of her lottery customers are from Alabama; she said there are quite a few.

Tax money, taken out of the Alabama state treasury, and put directly into the hands of the those in Georgia. They must care more (like Mississippi, Tennessee and Florida) for their children than we do in Alabama.

I'm beginning to feel as if I've moved to the Stone Age.

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - Sylacauga movie theater

BG - I think you're right; he said Bos but I think he meant BG. It's not the message they dislike, it's the way it's delivered.

Our friend BG is reknowned for speaking directly and, whether you like it or not, most everything he says is supportive of Sylacauga. He is not criticizing the town per se but rather he is pointing out the people he believes are problematic; that is his opinion (and usually right on the target!)

The new Chamber director seems to be getting things moving in the right direction; obviously it's just the beginning but the future seems better. As far as Joe Richardson, I don't know him and he's probably a nice enough guy. Sometimes, however, it's just time for a person to go and give someone else a chance; new blood brings action in a lot of cases.

As I've said, time and time again, Sylacauga is a dying town; perhaps it takes an outsider like myself (or someone like BG who isn't scared to say what he thinks) to see that. It's not just the Chamber that needs to act, however; your mayor, council and economic development folks also need to get on the stick. They waste too much time on trivial issues while other towns, while they may not be growing prosperously, aren't sinking at the rate Sylacauga is.

The number of empty stores in Sylacauga is starting to looking like the court square in your county seat. Sylacaugans should not settle for that - they should all have the gumption to say what they believe and hold their leaders accountable.

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - Busted! It's no secret that a lot of the money is used to improve their schools, etc, but I guess the backwards government and religious nuts in this state don't care about the kids. They must think, "Our kids are stupid but, by god, we won't allow the immorality of machines that the rest of the world has accepted!" They have their heads planted firmly up their posteriors and are hiding because out-dated, ridiculous laws and a Bible that doesn't say anything against gambling (or the other perceived evil in Alabama; selling alcohol on Sunday).

At the same time, I don't blame the sheriff at one level; he's doing the job that he's sworn to do. It is a victimless crime but the taxpayers need to stand up and simply say, "give us gambling or give up your position as governor, senator, representative, etc". The religious right and others aren't nearly as powerful as they used to be; we can overcome their prejudice against the desires of the citizens of the state.

To everyone who disagrees, try to understand this. People are going to gamble and people are going to drink on Sundays. They may have to go out of state or they may have to stock up on booze on Saturday to do either or both. We're not the Lord and we can't judge them for it. We are the United States and should pass laws that represent the will of the majority of the citizens.

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - Sylacauga movie theater

BG -

I saw a picture of that thing in front of the city hall. I know what it looks like (LOL!) but what is it supposed to represent?

Like I said, I was at the marble festival event held at the library; I noticed another sculpture there that looked like a woman contorting herself to touch her feet; they both must represent "modern art"!

Sincerely,

Bosley "Michelangelo" Alderman

Re: Daily Home - Desoto Caverns offers fun for young and old

I have never visited that cave but will do so based on your recommendations.

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about the children of today. For example, I know there are children in my neighborhood but I hardly ever see them except when they are waiting on the school bus or sprinting into the house once the bus drops them off! Their parents are always complaining that they never go outside and play like we did when we were kids! Kick the little rascals in the behind and tell them to go outside, enjoy the fresh air and play tag, hide-and-seek, ride their bikes or whatever! The citizens of the smaller cities outside of Birmingham have grown so used to the ease by which they can get to our malls, etc, that they've given up on seeing their own cities and towns thrive.

In thinking of your city, I have seen, or heard of, several events that were intended to draw visitors but didn't pan out very well. For example, I came down to the recent marble festival for an event at your museum; there were apparently other events but no one could tell me much about what was happening.

When that big stink debacle was at its pinnacle, I drove by there to experience that for myself; I noticed your sports complex in a very run-down part of town - why would visitors want to come there (or to your football stadium for that matter; my nephew's team went to SHS to play and the stadium looked like it hadn't been touched in about 50 years).

I also noticed what I thought was a mud-bog located next to one of your parks on the main road through town. Come to find out, it's some type of track for bicycle racing that is never used.

In short, there are three venues that should draw visitors but probably do not to their capacity.

I think we're in agreement; two things need to happen. First, people have to take pride in where they live and do their best to help it grow. Second, they must hold their elected officials accountable.

I sincerely believe a good medium-scale restaurant could thrive on the 280 bypass but people have to be willing to work to get it and work to keep it in business.

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - Sylacauga movie theater

As I said yesterday, I'm excited for the citizens of Sylacauga and their new theater.

At the same time, dear God - a Chik Fil A or a Milos?

When I've driven through Sylacauga, it already appears to be the fast-food center of the universe! How about insisting that your Chamber and city government solicit "real" restaurants to come to the area. You're located right on Highway 280; there's no reason a middle-of-the-road restaurant such as Ruby Tuesdays, Applebees or Chili's couldn't make it there with the right management.

Ask more from your city but be prepared to support what you ask for!

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - Movie theater opening

Hello all!

BA is back from visiting the "young 'uns" (isn't that the correct Southern pronunciation?) in Florida!

I'm very excited about the new theater for Sylacauga and will probably visit down there. Theaters in larger cities just do not have the same ambience as those in smaller towns; where I grew up in NJ, the local theater was like a Mecca on Saturday afternoons!

I'm looking forward to the smell of popcorn and our shoes sticking to the floors from all the candy and soda-pop residue! That's what a movie theater is all about! (Face it "old timers", you're having immediate flashbacks and are agreeing with what I'm saying!) I hope they make this a family oriented place to support the young couples in Sylacauga; perhaps throw in Saturday matinees and a cartoon before the movie starts! I don't think you need a lot of the rubbish that shows these days; Harry Potter is an excellent start!

On another note, Ramsland, as I remember, Jim Hethcock (sp?) ran against your current mayor. I've read some of what Jim has written; even he's not as verbose as BG, LOL!! (Don't take that personally BG, I think your plot revolving around the doings of a small town in the South could be the next "To Kill a Mockingbird" - perhaps SW or JC would agree to the Boo Radley role!) You're just another Harper Lee in the making!

It's good to be back in Alabama!

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

Re: Daily Home - July 4 celebrations special ones

Ah, yes. Sylacauga shouldn't be like all the rest of the communities in the South and celebrate on the recognized holidays! After all, Sylacaugans have special needs for family time, etc, that no one else in America has! Let Sylacauga have its own independence day; leave July 4th to the rest of America! Let's do like our fore-fathers; celebrate early and then get drunk until the fourth!

Please slow down when you write; you're letting your excuses getting ahead of your logic.

BA

Re: Daily Home - Freedom of speech trumps billboard petition

All -

First, BG and Steph - they could not have been controlled studies; there is no controlling Southern males! Have you never been to an Auburn or Alabama game or perhaps a race at Talladega, LOL!

Anyway, I'm down in Florida for a few days with the children and grandchildren; I see you're having a healthy discussion without me! The key is to remember that it's all about free speech; we don't all agree with one another and that's OK. At the same time, we must respect and defend each other's rights; we can't start fighting among ourselves - there are too many things we need to band together and fight against!

Sincerely,

Grandpa Bosley Alderman
