Diarmuid Martin was put in place to minimise the damage caused by the bishops' failure to refer reports of child abuse to the police.

No response from the bishops is required. The investigation has been completed and the report's conclusiuons are published.

Let's be absolutely clear. It has nothing to do with anyone's conscience. The Commission's report found that the Catholic church in Ireland covered up a huge crime.

Forget about bishops resigning. It's irrelevant. These people should not be in control of primary schools and hospitals in an independent republic.

Or maybe it isn't a republic after all.

@Noel Heavey, They are not sick. They are criminals. The church's assumption that the child rapists were sick is part of what caused the problerm.

@ Frank Browne, it's time not only for Murray but also for all the other clergy to be kicked out of our schools and hospitals. They have no business hiring and firing teachers.

There's no constitutional obstacle to the pension levy on judges' salaries. The constitutional provision relates only to pay cuts, not taxes or levies.

This erroneous argument was made on behalf of the judges and it worked. The government lost its nerve and didn't apply the levy to judges' salaries, even though there was nothing preventing it from doing so.

The furore wasn't about the paintings. It was about the fact that police questioned the artist, cautioned him, seized more of his paintings and sent a file to the DPP on spurious grounds. It was also about the fact that detectives went to a radio station and demanded details of emails they held, saying the "powers that be wanted something done".

When the police become an instrument of government we have good reason to be concerned, however trivial this incident might seem.
