None of that is true. With a few pages left, we offered people the chance to buy the full PDF of the book to read the ending early. You're misremembering that, I assume. You can look through the previous several pages to read those posts about reading the ending early.

If you go a certain amount of time without seeing your connected person at all (or hardly at all), you get very sick. Initially you feel a lot better, getting a break from seeing each other, storing up some energy from not being "awake" all day (either as yourself or the other), but after some more time it becomes very bad for your health. Takashi didn't get sick because he was secretly being asleep while she was awake at times, couldn't help himself from seeing her, as he says in the comic. This is why she heals so quickly at the end, because she's seeing through his eyes again, seeing his life. That's all she needed.

Just to clarify, in my thinking for the movie, we would see them meet in the water, but just barely in the center of the screen while we've already pulled back quite a bit. The audio would fade away as we get farther away, and we'd maybe just make out one or two words as they embrace and then we're too far away. I think it would be really powerful and work perfectly. Anyone who thinks the story absolutely requires more than that has no clue what they're talking about. I can understand people WANTING more personally, but to say it needs it shows a giant lack of understanding about stories in general and about this story.

Zero holes for anyone with a working brain. All of your points have been addressed numerous times in the comments, but here's another quick rundown:

"How are they going to avoid troubles after that flagrant landing with a forest fire nearby a lake and a plane crashing into it?"

Zero reason to think anyone (who isn't on their side) saw the plane crash, and fire trucks are on the way to put out the blaze (panel 3 of this page). Keep in mind that an army general is keeping this quiet, a general who knows that his daughter basically can't survive without Takashi. He also owns the lake that the plane is sinking into.

"For those of us versed in history, we know all the US Japanese get rounded up into internment camps during World War 2, and Takashi will be asked a lot of uncomfortable questions there. What are they going to do? How are they going to get him to escape when that starts?"

He won't be asked any questions obviously. He's going to be kept hidden from everyone else for years.

"Why on earth did Takashi, who wanted to play it safe, come all the way to the States in this dramatic, outrageously risky form? Why not have Elanor come to Japan? As much as Americans are detested there, it's less problematic than what Takashi just did."

You didn't bother to actually read the story. Elanor broke up with him, refused to see him at all, AND she was dying, which he knew about from spying on her at times when she was awake (which is why he's not sick). So the love of his life refuses to communicate with him in any way and she's on her death bed and you're asking why did Takashi go see her. Crazy.

They can definitely sleep at the same times, but they just can't overdo that by sleeping at EXACTLY the same times for too long, which would never be at all a concern. Do you think married couples often go several weeks in a row without ever having one be awake while the other's asleep? It's hard to do that for two days in a row when you're TRYING to do that.

"And quite a few readers weren't looking forward to resolving the issue of how they meet, but also some kind of follow-up where they could see them living together and what that entails, considering the strangeness involved."

It would be pretty boring to do a story about Takashi hiding in their basement for years while they wait for the war to end, and after that it would just become your basic unoriginal story about an interracial couple before that was widely accepted.

LOL. You people are out of your minds. "No sense of closure or conclusion at all," "little resolution to the story" . . . did you read the page? It basically says "They lived happily ever after." The entire story is about if they'll ever meet in person or not, with both characters at one point saying they don't care what happens after that because their entire goal is simply to see each other. And then not only do they meet, but it's very clearly implied on multiple levels that Takashi will easily be hidden and that they have a great chance of having a good, long life together. How is that possibly "no sense of closure or conclusion at all"?

"He can't see you. He can't know." Elanor was saying she had to go to sleep at the assigned time so Takashi wouldn't find out that she was sick/dying.

I agree with all of this, by the way, for all those morons out there who somehow think I'm bad at taking criticism. I'm bad at taking INCORRECT BULLSHIT criticism. This is actually correct criticism and I've been saying the same stuff for ages. Anyway, the movie will be a lot better.

Um, that's definitely the opposite of reality. That was probably the biggest problem of writing this comic, the fact that it's so difficult without moving pictures and sound to show fluid changes from "dream" to reality, from Takashi to Elanor and back. It's a major reason why narration was required. In a film all of that will be much more smooth and easier to understand.

They're in total shock and keep in mind that this is December 7, 1941 and they just witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor from a Zero. That's also a major reason why there's no kiss, along with the fact that they had their first kiss years earlier in the mirror and it would greatly take away from that to show another one and act as if it was the new first kiss. Their countries just went to war in dramatic fashion hours earlier and somehow Takashi has survived his journey to see her, and she's healed seemingly, and they're just completely stunned in every way. Also:

"Bobby-Crosby are you holding out on us?"

I actually gave you more than what I envision for the film's ending, which is to follow along with Elanor as she races out on the dock past her dad, but then hang back with him as she jumps in and we see from a distance as Takashi and Elanor swim to each other and meet, hear them saying things, but too far away to make out what. The whole story basically is a question of if they'll meet, if they'll see each other, and it's set up so you think they won't or one or both of them will die shortly after meeting. Once they meet, wrap it up, especially when this ending is so much "happier" (for them as a couple at least) than everyone was expecting. I kind of think of their meeting as a private moment between them, but we had to see at least some of it in a comic version. Moving pictures plus sound adds a lot.

The need to suspend disbelief is for the luck of Takashi's crossing of the ocean and landing in the lake. Zero need to suspend disbelief for Takashi not being captured after that.

Yes, few bars to buy and burn down. Just because it's a poorly populated area, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a "hell of a hard drive to get anywhere," but so what? You were obviously implying that it's difficult to believe they would be living in such an area, when that shouldn't be at all difficult.

Whoa, now you're being really confusing. Did you seriously miss some pages or something? Elanor's dad set the trees on fire so Takashi could see where they were.

He's "exempt" because no one will ever know he was there obviously. He's going to be hidden by Elanor and the general until the war is over. This wouldn't be very difficult even if people were looking for him, but no one will be looking for him, no one will know (or believe, or know where) a plane even crashed.

Haven't read "Sore Thumbs" in years. Not a fan of it.

The person who wants a flame war is the person who keeps proving with everything they say that they haven't even read the comic they're complaining about and that they know nothing about history while claiming that it's illogical for Takashi to not be captured. I mean, seriously, you think the plane landing in the middle of a lake somehow caused an explosion that set all the trees on fire, COME ON, jeez. Read the comic, then call it illogical.

If you were trying to be polite, you would have acknowledged the truth about things when you were shown to be wrong instead of continuing to try to argue nonsense. "Oh, I forgot it was out of gas, that's right." "Oh, right, maybe I was insanely wrong to say that the ONLY REASON America didn't stop the Pearl Harbor attack was because they assumed there'd be a declaration of war first. Maybe it did have something to do with very poor radar in 1941 and a host of other giant failures." "Oh yeah, the dad set the trees on fire, the plane didn't explode when it hit the water."

More importantly, though, the story is set up so it doesn't really matter what happens to Takashi and Elanor after they meet. For Elanor's whole life, since she was a tiny little thing talking to her doll, all she wanted to do was meet Takashi, to see him one time. And in recent times they've both basically assumed that if they were to meet, one or both of them would probably be in jail or dead shortly after, and they've both at times been fine with that -- they're clearly fine with it on the morning of December 7, 1941. Takashi's going on what he knows will probably be a suicide mission (it took insane amounts of luck/skill for him to cross the ocean and then land in that lake), and Elanor was just given the last rites, expects to die at any moment. So simply meeting is all that matters to them. Anything else is a total bonus, and we don't need to see exactly what happens, but the story strongly implies that they'll end up living happily ever after. It's basically the opposite of what everyone predicted for ages as this comic progressed. Everyone assumed a tragic ending.
