We were unpopular for taking out a tree, too. We did feel bad about the decision, which probably seemed sudden to the neighbors, but was something we deliberated for a long time before having the tree removed.

But there is now light in our house, plants will grow in our yard, we no longer fear windstorms, and the racoons (and their poo) have moved on.

I've worked customer service for next to nothing - low wages, no benefits...and yet my co-workers and I still managed to be nice to the customers.

IKEA pays some of the highest retail wages around, and has *terribly* rude employees.

It's the tone the management sets, really.

There are plenty of places for you to get your dead-animal dinner, but there aren't many places where I can order *anything* off the menu. Those places are priceless, especially after finding meat in "veggie" dishes a few times. It's good to know when I'm in a restaurant where that isn't going to happen.

I've been to their Wallingford location, and it was AWESOME.

Ballots were mailed out 10/16 - that's about a two-week timeframe to be able to find parking. I walked mine over from 8 blocks away, about a week before the deadline, and no one was there....

I handed out candy at work last night. Very few kids said "Trick or Treat", almost none said "Thank you" - even with the parents standing there. Some were downright rude, one even interrupting while I was talking to a *paying customer* to ask "Do I have to WAIT for my CANDY?" I resisted the urge to throw it at him.

It was really a depressing experience...

Agreed, Eric - my friend that committed suicide was all about caring for other people, and I think part of why he did it was because he felt like a burden to others. I wouldn't miss him nearly as much if he had been wrapped up in himself and compassionless.

Leatherette, I'm sorry about your father.

Interesting thought about feeling a disconnection in the place where they suicide...my friend committed suicide when he and his partner were out of town. I thought it may have been so his partner didn't have to live in the place where he died, but maybe he also didn't want to do it in a place HE had a connection to?

My condolences to his friends and family.
