I think that the larger websites have a better shot at ranking because they have more content (assuming they're relevant, which should be the case) that give them the leverage of increasing their relevance for their target keywords.

It's also proven that traffic from social media have poor conversion rate. Hence, the need for organic traffic. If you couldn't care less about conversion and the quality of traffic to your website, then social media is a good source.

Thanks for your impartial assessment. We have been using HostGator, BlueHost and DreamHost for our different websites. I'm just surprised that HostGator didn't perform well as I've expected. Among these three hosting companies, HostGator has been the most consistent. Site5 looks like a promising option.

I think it's hard to identify what are manipulative links even with the examples provided by the Google manual team. Almost every
form of linkbuilding can now be tagged as manipulative which is further aggravated by the fact that the manual team may vary in their perception of what's manipulative (even with a set of guidelines). SEO is
established to help businesses improve their online visibility, which in itself is manipulative. Unless Google finds a better way to rank websites other than relying heavily on backlinks, the issue of gaming their algorithm will remain a problem.
