And nobody said it has to be your only job. I do a lot of pro bono work for small organizations and nonprofits as a way to build/maintain some of my lesser-used skillsets, and I do it in the early mornings and late evenings so it doesn't interfere with my day job.

Great post.

Re: Are You Ready to Put Up or Shut Up, Ben Eubanks?

Thanks for the comment, Benjamin. I love it. I'm running into some trouble at work with IT stuff. We need some additional functionality, but nobody really wants to take ownership (and I don't think my boss wants HR to be "saddled" with the responsibility). It kills me, because the people that hold the keys to this "gate" are incapable of understanding where we should be headed. *sigh*

Re: Zombie Marketing: How to use Combined Relevance to Go Viral

I realized a while back just how popular zombies really are. :-) One of my top blog posts ever was a list post of reasons to hire zombies! http://upstarthr.com/10-rea...

Re: Watch Your Language!

Sometimes I forget to make sense, too. :-) And the Anti-Life Equation is a good example of that. Most people have no idea where that comes from. I'm actually writing a post called "Comic Book Leadership" that's coming out soon. At least I know someone will read it. :-)

Re: Mandatory Vacation for all Americans-Pipe Dream or Future Reality?

I'm definitely not for mandatory overtime. I think people will naturally gravitate to companies that have policies they like and away from those they don't. If a company doesn't offer some sort of leave, then they're going to be a weak competitor in the job market. But then again, maybe their culture and other benefits more than make up for the lack of a solid leave plan? It's a lengthy issue, and I think that Krista had some good points in her post. http://www.kamaletalent.com...

Re: A True Christmas Story. I enjoy it, it brings in some income, and it boosts my resume. My work was a big talking point during my interview, and I KNOW it helped to differentiate me from other candidates. "Hey, this guy is serious about this field, because he even writes about it in his free time!"

Plus, I've got another small business idea that I'm developing that is going to be a lot of fun. I keep getting these giddy feelings, because I'm doing something I love and sharing it with others.

And Seth Godin=awesome. The PMBA insider (another fabulous site) has a great video of Mr. Godin doing a presentation based on his book "Tribes," and I've watched it twice since I found it last week.

Re: A+A+O = 3 Elements to Hanging on to Your Job

Great article, Johnathan. I've been working extra hard on my organization skills recently. My Outlook's full of notes, appointments, and reminders. When I went to a recent job interview, the lady had printed out some of the articles that I've been writing. It was a great topic for discussion. I am hoping to get a job that allows me to demonstrate the importance of these social media tools to the company. Many are missing out on the importance!

As for the video... I usually check the Komando.com site for computer/tech questions. She has an amazing amount of free knowledge gathered over there. Would this help? http://www.komando.com/down...

Re: 10 Types of Predatory Managers – Seen These At Your Job Lately?

J.T, with people like you teaching the younger generation, we could be so much more than the managers we despise. The worst problem I've had is not so much my boss' fault, because the company culture dissuades us from being too innovative. Wow, you've got a great new process that will cut your work time down by 20%? Great. I'll run it by 34 layers of management to get approval before you actually have the permission to do that.

Another interesting thought brought up by this post comes from a recent episode of "The Office." The boss comes up with a "great idea." Then they find out it is going to cost the company a lot of money, so he pushes the responsibility onto an innocent party to save his own neck. Then, when the idea is loved by the senior management, he tries to take the credit for himself. It really made me wonder about how often it's done like that!

Re: Career Do-Over: “Don’t Delay the Living,” Says Corporate Brand Expert, Tom Asacker

I like the statement on how old is a state of mind. That's what I tell people all the time. They say, "Why would you ever want to leave?"

Well, I'm a young guy with a lot of ideas, and I'm certainly not going to be able to realize any big dreams while I'm toiling away at a dead-end job forever. I guess from the definition that I'm also stuck in one of those jobs (although not for long!).
