So successful have we been in privatizing prisons that they've seen dramatic growth since we did - 2.9% of the population either in jail or on probation! At the current rate we'll soon have all of our urban poor incarcerated thus solving the problem of providing them health insurance. A clear win!
Yet another area where the US leads the world.

The long comments below me talking about how the government have been making way too much money on their Fannie and Freddie investments all bear some striking similarities. I will take some real convincing to believe that they're not related to each other.

Paint my bottom blue and call me a conspiracist, but my guess is they're either from shareholders or the companies themselves!

Nice article Matt, and it's probably the most elegant solution I'm seeing proposed at the moment (other than the extremely unlikely one of either increasing or doing away with the ceiling).

While we wait to see what happens, can you arrange for cool footnotes along the lines of the ones on the WhatIf? comic? You click on them and a little text box appears which is closable? More useful and elegant than either the current debacle or the old DB hyperlinks....
