Schools tend to have a lot of discretion when it comes to privacy issues - a lot like a company. Individual rights to privacy (including employees and students) have become less protected with time. This will be an interesting case if it isn't quickly settled first.

For a moment I thought I was reading about me. I, too, prefer web to phone, wrote tons I chose not to publish in the past few months, have been reconnecting on FB with distant friends, etc. Social media is a more elegant means of intermittently tending to valued but distant relationships. For one thing social media renders unnecessary answering the "so what's new" question non-web friends are fond of asking when they finally get us on the phone after months or years.

This is about reputation of a company more than reputation of its consumers, isn't it? As such, it becomes an issue of corporate security. What company leaves security to its customers? No security system is perfect as the need for customer accessibility must be balanced with the need to protect company interests. Porn appears on YouTube but is immediately removed by company staff once discovered. Perhaps security is a task of reasonable diligence by Seesmic staff rather than defer to special users whose personal objectives may not be company objectives. Temporarily holding a video for review if flagged can be a short term solution without resorting to complicated ratings systems of users deputized to act in the interest of others.
