thanks for that.
I thought it used to copy everything through on a re-blog, maybe I'm
just getting old and forgetful.

Hasn't been the best of weekends, I've had to keep in contact with work
while some upgrades are in process to make sure everything goes to plan;
joy of being in IT. On the upside the weather is glorious right now in
Sydney so I've been hanging out with the family on the deck in between
stints on the computer ... I'll come around to getting a laptop one day.

Hope you're having a better one.

Hang in there kiddo. Sincerely hope things improve. Spent 5 months out of work over the last year myself, not by choice, the uncertainty is the stress maker. Stay positive, keep those job applications going, and bludge off friends and family, that's what they are there for.

Your not gross, far from it. Everybody through their lives will look at themselves and go "yuck"; we're our own worst critics. The world sees us with much less critical eyes, they have their own insecurities to deal with. Enjoy the formal, you deserve it.

I was being serious, I love you work I wouldn't take the piss unless accompanied by lots of smilies to give the game away. I'll be fine, worst comes to worst we'll draw down on the equity on the home until I get the next job; and I had no savings to speak of before we got the house so don't beat yourself up.

But the job market in Oz at least is picking up so I'm not expecting too huge an outage. Life is ups and downs. I've got a bit more baggage than you, plus a few extra decades, so all I can say is don't stay with a job that you dislike or a company that will cut your pay. It will be hard to claw that back, they now know how much you will work for.

But it is just to easy to stay in a job that your despise, so that you can just pay the bills. Keep your eyes/ears open for other positions, and if they sound like the thing you want to do, take the jump and don't worry so much about the money. In time you'll be stuck with the mortgage, kids (optional, not really required and a lot of work) and, for the love of Richard Dawkins forbid an unemployed partner to support. Then your options are limited a bit, but right now take a chance. Worst comes to the worst and it's back to parents/grandparents/aunts&uncles/or just good friends homes to stay. If you can reach half way around the world to make somebody there care about you're life, you should have no problem closer to home.

I agree the B&J wouldn't make it to Oz, but next time I visit my family in Canada (Toronto and area) I'll make a side trip to Buffalo to try out your recommendations.

I can't imagine what your going through. Seriously. 20% cut would destroy me. By now I thought I would be comfortable, saving up for retirement. But no, retrenched a year ago, two jobs since, 3 months unemployed, and my contract is up at the end of December, so I'm looking for another job; I would be anyway giving this one is soul destroying. Two kids growing up, I'm bored of the work I do, and trying to convince the employers I'm really interested. Only advice I have is if you have no commitments, trim it right down, think really hard about what you want to do and jump for it; as there will be a time when too much obligation will hold you down. And if it is the bayou, please drop us a line once in a while to let us know how happy you are, and so that we may know that at least one of us made it away.

Obviously I was talking about thunderbird ... I shouldn't post until I've had my first coffee of the day. Main issues I've had with Firebird is including too many add-ins leading to things to slow down or get very irratic ... also doesn't help that I use NoScript which means I sometimes have to re-load a page from a new web site several times before I get the permissions right, but at least it seems to keep all the nasties out.

I had huge problems with Firefox over the last month or two it literally drove me to tears of frustration. Turns out it was the update to my virus scanner. The virus scanner not only scanned the incoming email but also the inbox where the email was stored; and something in this behavior had changed due to the update. So every time an email arrived or I deleted an email the virus scanner would scan the inbox file all 1.5GB of it (I got to clean it out). This just killed my machine and made processing of any email really, really, really, ..., really slow. I found the solution hidden away on the virus scanner's website, put an exemption in so that the inbox directory isn't monitored in real time (but the incoming email still is) . Huge improvement ...

thanks for this. Had read a report in the Fin Review earlier this year which suggested the number of ships sitting idle in the strait had gone up. Now armed with the on-the-ground facts I can go to Friday drinks to discuss implications with mates.

If you have a chance can you get to the harbour area and take a photo of all the ships in the strait. During the economic down turn 100's of container ships were just moored up there. I want to know if the economy has turned (ie, time to put my super back into equities).

Fair point, And I've changed it slightly but it probably will still be seen as offensive. I guess in a way I've given up on "the good fight", when people in such influential positions, with all the resources at their disposal to get to a real understanding of the issue, just go the "populist" route you've really got to question their motives and it comes down to two things money or stupidity.

I think your right not to reblog my posting, it was just me letting off steam (once again) but please in any anti-vax posting put a link in to stopjenny.com

I like to see all these new ideas that come out run the gauntlet of user acceptance and watch what happens, sometimes the oddball ideas do win. There have being some counter claims to the Windows-On-Netbooks win, and probably counter-counter claims.

I don't think the Net, or users, is as yet ready for a traditional Netbook thus the migration upwards in machine specs. However, what I'm waiting for are CloudBooks, essentially low powered (small ram, maybe no drive), decent screen size, great wireless networking (both mobile and WiFi) and very, very light, and reasonably cheap (think Kindle II but with a better keyboard and more responsive screen). With a "CloudBook" (I should probably TM that) the ideas is that your apps are on the web, as is all your data, even the processing is "out-there". Of course for this to work the current crop of cloud applications are going to have to improve and the number of different options in storage and applications out-there are going to have to integrate a lot better.

Of course the "CloudBook" and cloud computing won't be suitable to all, but for a large number of people having a device like this would make a great second machine for use while they are out and about ... at least I'd want one.

It is horrible, and I don't think we really understand yet why it happens. In Tasmania they think it might have been the shape/slope of the beach which confused the animals. Not sure if anybody has any ideas what happened at King Island
