Actually reminds me of another post by Christine Lu, who decided to hide her number of followers by coloring a part of her site so it isn't humanly visible. And another by Loic who posted about also "unfollowing" numbers of twitter followers.

There are people like Guy Kawasaki who believes in the quantity of Twitter followers and there are people like yourself and others who believe in quality of Twitter followers. And as you mentioned before, it really depends on what you want out of it.

So which one is better? And which one is right? I think it's both and neither. Twitter is not a means to an end but a tool to get you there, what you want, need and aspire.

I have a small following in Twitter (less than 1,000). In fact it is less than 500 and I have been on Twitter since the start of last year. I have seen other "newcomers" who build up an obscene list of followers in a very short space of time with less than a handful of tweets - it's crazy.

I follow a lot more people than those that follow me. Do I wish I had more followers? Absolutely! But I cannot see how a person can keep a conversation, following thousands and keep up with it all. You'd have to be:

1. Either on your keyboard typing madly every second.
2. Or on a (VB x Caffeine) fix just to keep going.

Just like Yin and Yang, the good also comes with the bad. And with Twitter it's SPAM. There is nothing worse (in Twitter) than taking up your whole page from Spammers who made gazillion dollars in less than 30 days and claims to show you the "holy grail" of making money. There's nothing bad with making money, in fact I fully endorse it - as long as it's ethical and not SPAM.

So, back to your post - I fully agree with you on this. Maybe you can write a post on "Which type of Twitter are you? Quality or Quantity?"

Just my two cents,
Twitter: @ArmandAguillon

Re: Cuil: We Get Over It

Nice post Brad and well said.

I didn't realise you now work at Cuil. Fortunately, I don't have as much of a problem when others have a lot of followers like yourself. Although, I must say that even with a small following I get the occasional DM's saying how they make gazillion dollars through twitter in their PJ's.

Not that there is anything wrong with it - and good luck to them. One thing I don't like is when there's a lot of them with automated scripts saying the same thing. When that happens, I "unfollow" them right away. With a small following this can be done easily - with a lot of followers, it may be a different story.

I also agree with you on the quality of followers. At the moment, I'm following the people that I think have something decent to say... people like @Loic, @Scobleizer, @Techcrunch, @mashable, etc and other personal friends. I must say that I have learnt a lot... and I mean a lot, from following the people in the (tech) industry. I think that's what twitter should be used for - that's how I use it.

I think of Twitter as being a "fly on the wall" listening to very important discussions on what is the latest in the industry - and join in on conversations that I believe have merit.

Anyway, enough of my rant... I'm glad to have come across this post.

By the way, I am now following you on Twitter (and not expecting a follow back either).

Just my two cents,
@ArmandAguillon

Re: How to Build a Strong Reputation With Blog Comments

Hi Brett,

Thanks for the follow on Twitter. I appreciate it a lot. I've actually added you sometime ago and nice for the follow back.

By the way, I've also subscribed to your feed. Good articles by the way. Keep it coming.

Also, good luck on your 1000+ followers. With good quality articles like yours I'm sure you'll reach it in no time. I'll spread the word for you when I can.

cheers,

Twitter: Armand Aguillon

Re: How to Build a Strong Reputation With Blog Comments

Brett,

In response to Barbara's comments and your response, I must say that you have a way with words and being diplomatic. Not to mention emphatic... You don't see that a lot nowadays especially online...

I'm glad I came across your post. Keep up the good work.

Twitter: @ArmandAguillon

Re: [videos and an article] Real Traffic, My “Nakedness” – and Happy Birthday to me!

Happy happy birthday Tinu! I mean, just on breaking news of Oprah joining twitter she already had over 26,000 followers (and 62,812 in counting) she's sure to beat a million mark in no time.

Twitter better work overtime! :)

My bet is Oprah will reach a million followers in about 3 weeks or less (after her show).

Any bets?

Re: Build 26 – More Digsby, Less Bugs

I dig - Digsby! Turn off the Internet

Robert,

I too have been wondering about this as lately, I have been quite addicted to twitter... I have also been pondering about your belief that it is better to follow people than people following you.

Hence, I have taken the liberty to add people on twitter (though not as much as yours) but I must admit that I have picked up a lot of great resources and ideas just from following people such as yourself.

However, this has also taken quite a toll on me because most of the time I have twitter going off through my mobile. When I'm at work I have it on silent and I still have it on when I go to sleep (on silent of course).

Sometimes, I don't want to miss out on something that may be really important. So, i reread the posts in there when I'm on the bus and the train to go to work and the same when I get home from work to home.

I'm lucky that I'm not on facebook (yet)! Don't use flickr much nor youtube but I have friendfeed and if I find that I can somehow integrate friendfeed on my mobile - well.. I'll definitely need to prioritise..

What I'm trying to say is, even on twitter itself I find that it's taking up a lot of my time and I don't know how you can keep up, especially following just over 19,000 people let alone answering over 5,000 emails. I have to commend you for that.

And you're right, when push comes to shove (such as being stuck in an airplane for 10 hours) and there's nothing else but do what you have to do under the circumstance - you just do it.

cheers,
Armand
from Down Under

Re: Free Tips for Your Blog

Chris,

This article is great! Straight to the point 'no mucking around' stuff. I really have no idea why it isn't showing on my laptop... as long as you can see on yours then I know it's working for someone else...

Gotta figure it out... The area where you put the comments in and the commenter's details aren't showing at all in Firefox.

I'm not sure if this is a plugin issue in firefox or a flash plugin issue. I know at the moment my computer cannot hear sounds at all when I play any youtube videos or flash videos. I can see the video clearly but not hear the audio. So, not really sure if this (flash) has something to do with it.

Can you please advise as to what I can do from here?
