I think LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter are the most important social media sites that should be updated, so that is what I only usually update. All the others are just simply there to add to my online presence and have a link to my Twitter or blog so that others who happen to come across my un-updated profile can be redirected to my updated profile.. But that's just me.
I'm thinking that maybe if anyone wants to update his/her profile on all his/her social media sites (specifically those not frequently used), do it probably at least once a month.

Nice post! Well, there are some RSS readers that give suggestions on rss feeds which you could subscribe to which will make it easier for newbies. You get to choose categories which you are interested in and they've got a number of popular feeds for each, but you have the option to unsubscribe to some if you wish. I've been using Newsgator not too long ago and I like it, so I think this would be a good one for newbies to use as well.
