According to this NYTimes article from 2012, Faulkner himself proposed the color printing but it wasn't technologically possible in 1929 - sorry can't link from my iPad.(http://www.nytimes.com/2012...

Re: nonfiction. There is great nonfiction coming this fall (Candice Millard's HERO OF THE EMPIRE is fabulous) but the real issue is not that readers don't want it, it's that the election and political landscape sucks up all of the media attention -- so the usual publicity outlets that help drive sales of books is instead focused on the election, authors can't get on as many shows, etc. This is less of an issue for fiction because it's much more difficult to get that kind of coverage for fiction in any year, so the election has less impact.

Re: BOTNS #381: One-sit wonders

Thank you, Peg!

Re: BOTNS #376: Ten Books, a Whale, and a Library Farm

Hooray!

Re: BOTNS #372: We Need Diverse Books

The statistics show why many readers feel under-served by the number of books reflecting diverse ethnicities, stories, backgrounds and experiences.

Do I think you should give up your dream of working in publishing? Of course not. It's not an either-or scenario. But the traditional path to "big 5" publishing has left many people out in the cold. There is now a recognition of that, and hopefully efforts to address it. It doesn't mean that the industry will stop recruiting out of publishing programs; it does mean that they may now also start recruiting at other places and trying to make the workplace look more like the marketplace.

Not everyone can afford to take an unpaid internship in NYC to get a foot in the door. In fact, very few can. But that has been one of the paths. The addition of paid internships is a step, but unless you have a place to live in NYC or family who can subsidize the experience, it's going to be very difficult to take that route. All of these statistics are a means to prove out what many have felt for a very long time.

Re: BOTNS #372: We Need Diverse Books

Thank you, thank you! i will put these on my reading list. However, in this specific case, I know that Barefoot Books is a wonderful and legitimate publisher, and this "ad" can actually be a viable resource for librarians, teachers or parents looking for diverse books, which, as we discussed on the podcast, can be hard to find. So I'm going to leave it. But that doesn't mean it's a free for all for people to post ads and promotional comments. Thanks for your cooperation.

Re: BOTNS #370: Reading While Distracted

I did read The Wife, The Maid and The Mistress, and loved it!

Re: BOTNS #366: One Host, One Book

Thank you!

Re: BOTNS #365: Well that makes browsing easier!

I wouldn't let one audiobook sway you from listening to others.
