And it's gonna hurt when it lands because it's a super-stiletto. Man, this is just horrendous. Really, talk about tyranny of the majority! I want the system they have in France: Church & State have mostly successfully been separated so ALL marriages are civil unions. If you're religious then you go have your wedding in a church-- but the marriage is not legal until the civil union part. I think that's a real solution. I also see some poetry in the fact that so many people who voted for removing legal & human/civil rights from their fellow citizens have also stated emphatically that they support civil unions. So, let's get behind civil unions for EVERYBODY! I realize that many people who are gay are also religious, but the point here right now as far as I see it is legal/human rights. We'll have to deal with churches individually & from within.

Re: http://www.americablog.com/2008/12/something-upbeat-to-go-with-morning.html

Wow, thanks for that! Couldn't have imagined a nicer vocal accompaniment to my coffee this morning. I grew up not toooooo far from where Zal Yanovsky grew up & so when the Spoonful made it they were very popular in our little corner of the world. We felt connected to them. This particular song still works on me haha! You are so right, Britisher.

Re: Krugman is terrified again

Okay, I'm going out on a limb here & invoking the idea that sometimes the "best" solutions are the simple ones.... In that vein, I think this is how we "get out of it". First, accept that there is no magic bullet solution-- multiple approaches are the way to go. Second, accept that it will be frustrating and hard. I'm convinced that for some time we will have to step backwards technologically to some degree. Three, get ready for a 'sweat equity' revolution. Four, let go of preconceived notions of comfort. There are probably umpteen more. For years many people have been attempting to develop economic practices that are a combination of barter & currency. They were largely ignored because the federal printing of money was just so much easier, I guess. I believe that now is the time to revisit LETSystems & Ithaca Dollars/Hours-style approaches to commerce/survival. What I think will keep people from starving while the convulsing global economic monetarist approach is re-invented is multiple, inter-active, inter-connected community-based trade/monetary systems based on skills & time availability. Then we rebuild from the local community UP. One million people a month out of work-- that's a super shitload of sweat equity & time availability.

Re: I want your input. I've never heard of microlactin, but will check it out. My body is in love with Wobenzym-- I almost never have arthritis flare-ups any more. Seriously, I can't even remember the last time I had one. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis years ago. I'll talk to my dog's vet about it as well. Thanks!

Re: I want your input. Obviously I need to read the posts more closely-- didn't realize the discussion was about homeopathic remedies only. Enzymes are great-- just got so tired of treating symptoms so I'm primarily focusing on identifying & addressing causes now. Tumeric intrigues me, too. I've read conflicting info about amounts needed though, so I'm still at the research stage with it.

Re: I want your input. It was heart-breaking. Then she got bursitis. Ick. In desperation, I started sharing my Wobenzym N with her. Within a week she was noticeably improved. A year later, she's out running around with our other border collie. She's still stiff at times, but no longer requires walking assistance. Talk about "placebo effect"... I wrap her pills in a bit of Pill Pockets, so she hasn't a clue that she's taking a supplement.

John, it's expensive, but do check out Wobenzym N as a preventive measure. It really helps with controlling inflammation. I've been taking it for 6 years now and no longer take any pharmaceuticals. Nor do I get sick with bronchial problems like I used to. Haven't had one of my annual winter colds or the flu in 6 years. Seriously; no exaggeration at all.

Re: I want your input. My understanding from John is that he's looking to fill his prescriptions through a private online business. This doesn't tap into public health. This is about Pharmabusiness. I have never had any difficulty with my 'scripts or costs because of Americans buying drugs here.

Re: Canadian left forms alliance that could unseat Bush crony

What a fabulous lot of great posts here! Yes, this is so very exciting for the reasons mentioned below. I am really fascinated because this is the first time in my life I get to see first-hand the process of a parliamentary democracy that has been challenged by a Coalition gov't. I am thrilled to see that Dion is attempting to find some way to include Elizabeth May. Wow-- a government that actually represents the people of this country as opposed to the typical "tyranny of the majority"! I am curious about how The Bloc will behave as a working part of the gov't. This is so interesting!

Re: A little Carmela blogging

OMG-- how can you not squeeze her all the time?! I think you came across as quite respectful. I saw nothing in your statements that was disrespectful. Some people are simply reactive and hurtful. Their hatefulness is not commentary about you; it is commentary about themselves & their own character. I do hope you continue to speak out.

Re: Those wacky Canadian socialists

$40,000? Not per year. Not by a long shot. You must be thinking about the cost of a degree. Tuition changes with type of degree as well-- it costs a lot to become a dentist (what you're quoting, for example), but then the salary expectations after graduation are really high. Tuition for the typical B.A. costs about $5,000. per year across the country. You can expect an Honours B.A. to cost around $20,000.00. This is current info-- my daughter just graduated with her B.A. Also, I think you need to better define "quality education".

Re: Those wacky Canadian socialists

So glad to see this topic raised for discussion. I'd really like to see more of it, actually. Americans have been lied to for decades and it's appalling to see. Especially in light of the fact that your own federal politicians have such remarkable health care plans for themselves & their family members. In terms of the discussion, I think the really pertinent point is to decide who (or what) is the most reasonable agent to decide on the actual delivery of health care: a disinterested government or a profit-driven private company. With universal, tax-funded health care, standards of health care provision are supported by our constitution (charter of freedoms & rights) and must be equitable for all Canadians. That means that I can expect reasonably similar care regardless of where I get sick in this country & regardless of my illness/the health care resources I must use in order to get well. With a private business-owned system, the HMO or private company gets to decide what care is made available based upon their company's interests. Of course, the down-side to publicly-funded universal health care is that one has to deal with bureaucracy & bureaucrats. Never any fun. At the same time, because there are federal standards of care, paid for by the people of this country, there is no denial of services because of pre-existing conditions, or quotas or whatever excuse a private insurance company can come up with to deny coverage. I KNOW that no matter what happens I will receive the health care I need when I need it. It is my responsibility to ensure that I am an educated health care user so that I receive the best that is available & that that occurs in a timely fashion.

Re: Those wacky Canadian socialists

John, I'm not so sure there is a 'Hobson's choice'. I'm not sure residency status is necessary. Unless I have misunderstood, anyone with the money to do so can readily access medical treatment in your country. So, not only do I have my universal health care plan in Canada, I can opt to be treated in your country, too. Not only that, if the procedure is unavailable in my country & is a necessary life-saving treatment, I can probably get at least partial reimbursement from my own health care plan. We see it here from time to time-- patients sent to the U.S. when there is no comparable treatment/doctor in Canada. Now, in all fairness, they don't give it away-- you have to demand it to get it, but I do believe it's possible.

Re: The cover of TIME, circa 2004

Wow. In the beginning I was impatient & let my anger take over. As a result I made mistakes that I regret & held back progress in my work. You did a good thing by voting for Obama. His presidency will be an opportunity. Treat it as such. You have a president-elect who cannot for any excuse/reason ignore discrimination. It is now up to the people of your country to hold him to his promises & make him live up to the commitment to excellence he has pledged. Tonight President-elect Obama said that he would listen to those who disagree with him-- HOLD HIM TO IT. He's just a man, not a demi-god. Speak so that he will hear. Despair is the death of hope & without hope there can be no change. Re: Pravda "8 Years of Hell Are Over"-- Amen to that! Oh, and a big shout out to Americans tonight from Canada! Way to dodge that crazy Palin bullet!

Re: Palin falls for prank call from fake French President

Yeah, it's all over the Canadian news, too. Love the dismissive statement from Palin's staff. I just took this off the MSN Canada site:

"'Gov. Palin was mildly amused to learn that she had joined the ranks of heads of state, including President Sarkozy, and other celebrities in being targeted by these pranksters. C'est la vie,' Tracey Schmitt in the email.

Starting with persistent phone calls to Alaska, Audette said it took the duo -- which also includes Sebastien Trudel -- about four days of phone calls to Palin's handlers to finally get in touch with her."

Nobody caught them out for 4 days? Crazy!

Re: Palin falls for prank call from fake French President

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Just creasingly funny. mmedefarge-- your french is just fine. "Vive" is correct, I believe & you're referring to the people of a country, so the C should stay capitalized, please. None of these people is ready for national and international politics. If that really was Palin & her staff then they were ridiculously informal. Just bad form. Like to see her deal with the House of Saud. Can't... stop... laughing. Know... I... shouldn't... laugh... can't... help... myself hahhaha!!!!! They're so rich & entrenched I'm not sure they're bound by rules any more. I'm not sure about his citizenship or his "right" or not to butt into American politics (just like with myself). However, he is a very well-respected man around the world, influential people do listen to him & I am so happy to hear what he said about Palin. She just cannot be allowed to continue. You think the world dislikes your government now-- well, Palin is just a shitload of trouble for the U.S. from an international perspective. Ganging-up will occur. The U.S. won't be invited to the strategy meetings. It will get ugly. Even the most hard-core Republicans will eventually begin to long for the days of peace & dignity under Clinton! Just a piece of trivia about Mr. Frum-- his mother Barbara (American-born, Canadian-raised) was the premier TV anchor in Canada and a vocal/active liberal/Dem until the day she died. In terms of her style & rep, rather like Diane Sawyer. She was brilliant and compassionate. It was actually really shocking when David went to work for Bush. His sister is a rabid conservative, too.
