They have already made huge investments, both in terms of money AND in terms of effort, Blender would offer them NO benefit, who in their right mind would switch? Another point - when I watch, say, Shrek, I really don't care about the software it was made with, or what CPUs do they use at the render farm (or what OS. or how long did it take to render it.). This is nothing but trivia for the viewer (well, I am curious, but frankly I don't care much)

About Maya: I actually wrote a couple of plugins for it (custom format exporters), about 5 years ago. I hate its UI (well, there are worse apps, much worse, but still).

Suggesting Maya proves that 1) I used to work with it 2) I do not like Maya UI (artists I worked with loved Maya and hated Max, whereas I didn't really enjoy Maya API or UI, Max UI looks much cleaner)

In any event, Blender is one of the better FOSS apps.

Re: Lusers make me laugh ver.4

Actually, Blender is quite good IMO. Sure, its painful, but at least you can be sure everything is consistent (well, at least in theory, as I suspect in practice its much harder then configure / make / install)

Re: Lusers make me laugh ver.4

Too sweet to actually happen. Windows / OS X market share is small compared to Linux? Wait a second, these words must have some other meaning I'm unaware of... hm.

2. The only reason Linux has any market share on desktop (IMHO) is that it a) works at times (like, you only install stuff from your distro CD and lucky enough to have all your HW supported or simply don't care). Plus it happens to _look_ like a real, working, stable desktop OS. And, of course the fanboyism - they blow the flames hard enough to ensure there are always people willing to try out Linux (not that there are many)

Or something like that, I guess.

Re: Foxnews^H^H^H^Hconn conspiracy

Well, I can't see why any GUI framework would be SO much easier to use then another (without their form designers). I've seen a couple of frameworks (and the worst designer is Netbeans' Swing form designer), but wouldn't recommend going without at least some kind of designer for anything more serious then Helloworld with any of them.

As for .NET, well, this little open source perversion of mine - http://akireev.freehostia.c...
was written mostly is a simple text editor, on a PDA (because I was bored out of my mind during bus rides :). Interface is simplistic, I admit, but doing C# forms w/o form designer is possible (although, again, I'd recommend against this approach), and easier then MFC without VS for sure.

Re: Foxnews^H^H^H^Hconn conspiracy

Firefox 3: This web site at www.antivirusgolden.com has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked based on your security preferences.

Firefox is great. Still, the point was that Linux' market share is negligible (not for all companies, of course, but smaller companies would be wise to ignore it). OS X is something completely different, Apple controls every aspect there - be it hardware or software (drivers, firmware). Linux, on the other hand, is highly fragmented. When "FOSS enthusiasts" start to understand that this lack of conformity (and stability) is their major long-term problem, then and only then may Linux gain in popularity on desktops. Not when another mega-killer WM with wobbling windows and rotating icons comes out.

Re: Foxnews^H^H^H^Hconn conspiracy

>>> I'd like to see someone develop a really complex .NET app without Visual Studio and its nice features, such as Forms designer, intelli-sense, and all that mumbo jumbo. Probably not that productive, right?... well isn't that the whole purpose of .NET--to make Windows development easier? If you still have to use an IDE to get work done then what is the difference?

Not that your point (writing a .NET app w/o VS) makes more sense, then, say, developing MFC app w/o VS, or developing a VCL app w/o Delphi or C++ Builder (or BDS or whatever they call it now), but have you heard about Sharp Develop? I have actually used it, and its good. I'm not sure if MonoDevelop is any good, though.

Re: Foxnews^H^H^H^Hconn conspiracy

Sorry, but GCC consistently generates bigger binaries then MS compilers (and they're free, too).
Intel compiler may be better then all those, though (never actually tried it)

Re: Foxnews^H^H^H^Hconn conspiracy

Where did I call him stupid? :P
He just likes toying with Linux, I guess, just like he likes toying with Brew or whatever.
Well, he's got time to play with those, good for him.

Re: Foxnews^H^H^H^Hconn conspiracy

Another thing, before some "FOSS enthusiast" comes and enlightens me about id Software.

Yes, I know about Carmack's fondness towards Linux and OpenGL. I've read his rants about how OpenGL is superior to DirectX back in 98 (or was it in 99?). It was a long time ago, however, and DirectX has matured since that time.

I wonder how much id earns from Linux customers, but I guess there's no way to tell (they give binaries for free and you have to buy Windows version for game contents, AFAIK). My guess is that Linux ports are rather Carmack's pet project then anything with a real purpose. Maybe he thinks Linux will mature and become another desktop market, who knows - companies do stuff that is not necessarily profitable at the moment.

Looks like he is not that hopeful anymore:
http://sathyasays.com/2007/...

Re: Foxnews^H^H^H^Hconn conspiracy

And I use Apollo ( http://koti.welho.com/hylin... )
It has a really simple, minimalistic interface (which is what I like about it).
