@Tammy - I understand what you're saying and in no way think that if she hadn't that anyone would have considered her or any woman in her position as selfish. I wanted to highlight her in comparison to these women who I would consider selfish. I think it creates a stark contrast and says a great deal about how an individual can balance their personal experience in the face of an unspeakable tragedy and do so with compassion.

A friend had her daughter in NYC on 9/11, wouldn't you know she still says how grateful she is that she had a physician to attend her despite how badly they were needed elsewhere. She even tried to offer her bed, just a few hours post-labor. I need to send her a "Thanks for not being a selfish bitch" card.

She was a writing instructor I had in High School and she went by Lydia.

Frankly, I don't think any of this should come as a surprise when you look at Holly's brilliant command of the English language (and clearly exemplary kitchen cleanliness). Feces in the hair seems expected if this is the shallow gene pool that produced you.

My Aunt Joanne passed away a few years ago from a very rare cancer and she told us about a very thin girl coming up to her after one of her hoity toity Manhattan yoga classes saying "I would die to be as thin as you!" and my Aunt simply responded "I am dying." BA-ZING. The way she told the story made the girl sound like one of those sorority chicks who pulls at their skin and whines "I'm soooooo fat" so you can see how my aunt's response was just bitchin' and not bitchy. I think she would have dug your comeback.

I will be honest, when I finished grad school it was at the same time that I completed my first year of teaching high school... when the first day of real summer vacation hit I realized that, with no summer courses and no classes to teach, the most thought I gave to anything that day was "toast or english muffin?" It wasn't an existential dilemma or anything, it was just a blissful fact of a newly uncomplicated life.
