One thing is to outsource production work, another one is outsource the soul and bones of your come back. In Europe, Tesla stated it plans to use a higher Amp-Watt rated Type-2 plug for it's Norway (EU) Super Charging network; which will be compatible with all EU Type-2 charge stations. If Tesla Motors can make a small high Amp-Watt rated plug/connector, why can't standard bodies find a similar ergonomic design?

Since existing J1772 & Type-2 standards support upto 20 kW/h charging; the is really no benefit to using Combo plug unless a station providing greater than 30 kW/h of charge. Additionally size-weight, lack of Combo plugs at existing stations, plus lack of plug-cable-adapters are hurtles that SAE Combo standard need overcome. CHAdeMO also has a size-weight issue that needs to be addressed at some point (it's advantage is CANBUS communication, which is standard on all vehicles since 1990's).

Re: More EV Charging Stations Than People In The US

Location of plug outlets is an important factor; just because there are 475 million 110V plugs they are not all great choices. If the plug is in-doors and needs an extension cord, there will be a voltage drop, related to the light of the cord. Not all 110V plugs instalations have GFI, which is a great safety feature should cord, or plug be exposed to elements. (Newer wiring should have CFI integrated already)

If enough time (hours) are available, or just a partial capacity charge is required then slower (& cheaper) 110V power is an ideal solution. As prices of EV batteries drop over the next few years then 110V (1650 kW/h) will become less useful except for extreme emergencies as pack capacities increase. e.g. Tesla Model S (200-300 mile range) will take over 50 hours to charge on 110V plug. Chances are good that 120-200 mile range will be common for EVs in next five years! (65-80 mies is common range for Fit EV, Leaf, & 500e today)

Re: Putting All 20,000 Electric Car Charging Stations on the Map

By equating EV Charge Stations to Petro Gas Stations many key points are missed. The cost of petro gas is about $0.15/mile vs. $0.03 for electrical energy (based on $3.50/gal & $0.11/kWh). While a gas vehicle can only add energy at a petro station, EVs add 90% energy at home while parked overnight. (ie: EV only needs to 10% of time at a public station, 1/10 the number of times a gas vehicle needs to stop)

A petro gas station can replenish energy at about 2000 miles per hour (eg: 350 miles in 10 min). Not all 20,000 charging stations meet the needs of modern electric vehicles. Some stations like Tesla's SuperChargers(SC) can provide 400 miles of energy per hour (200 miles in 20 min). Other DC Quick Chargers provide 150 miles energy per hour (eg: Nissan LEAF). There are about about 140 SC pumps at 23 stations and another 310 DC Quick Charge stations in US; however the remaing charge station only proved 10-20 miles of energy per hour (3.3-7kW/h AC Level 2 chargers). This is a critical factor in building the right charger station infrastructure. Some charger are OK for an airport parking lot, others make highway travel possible.

PS: there have been no documented cases of Model S batteries being damaged by SuperCharging. Don't think Tesla would offer unlimited warranty on Model S's battery, be expanding it's SuperCharging network if that were the case.

Re: In Japan, BMW i3 Gets CHAdeMO, Slow Charge Connector Hidden Under Hood.

Seems backwards… charging taking hours to complete requires popping the hood, while a quick charge (CHAdeMO) taking minutes uses a more secure fender port.

Honda's solution used on Fit EV (Japanese model) seems better… a charge port on opposite (front) fenders. http://www.honda.co.jp/FITE...

Re: In Japan, BMW i3 Gets CHAdeMO, Slow Charge Connector Hidden Under Hood.

Note in EU/UK, Tesla will be using Type 2 connector. The Tesla Type 2 can automatically reconfigure to support charging from: AC 200-220 2-phase (3-20 kW), AC 200-220 3-phase (6-43 kW), and Tesla SuperCharging (90-120 kW). While SuperCharging is not part of the Type 2 spec, Tesla has added the capability for its customers.

An adaptor to/from CHAdeMO, or to/from CSS will require EVSE-like electronics to provide digital/analog translation of two protocols, plus ground-fault safety features. Thus cost would be similar to other EVSE charge point.

Re: In Japan, BMW i3 Gets CHAdeMO, Slow Charge Connector Hidden Under Hood.

DC is not part of the Type 2 plug spec, Tesla reconfigures the plug to use pairs of pins to charge on DC. The EU/UK approved standard for DC is Type 2 plug for communications, mated with CCS (2-large power pins) for DC current. Tesla uses the Type 2 AC pins to move DC current. This likely means Tesla has tighter engineering specs on its plug/connector & higher power rating for the cable (beyond the Type 2 spec). Result is a lower priced cable than CCS cable as has less copper (2-less large wires) and have the connector.

There is technically nothing from stopping EU/UK from adding Tesla DC charging to Type 2 standard. Tesla (Elon) has stated that they are open to licensing their charging technology.

PS: Elon Musk has recently taken on an advisory role with UK government related to electric vehicles and infrastructure. Not to start any rumors, but has more experience deploying EV infrastructure than has been in any standards committee to this point.

Re: In Japan, BMW i3 Gets CHAdeMO, Slow Charge Connector Hidden Under Hood.

Thanks, interesting note. Also, the engine (block) is still same mass vs. lighter body.

CRFP is less conductive to thermo loads so could offer better interior climate management.
