If a presentation or analysis tool wants to show its users what would happen if they clicked on a shortened URL, it should be able to so simply and consistently.  Again, I applaud you for offering the API - I'm just asking for all the shorteners to do things in the same way.  If everyone requires an API key, then reader/analysis tools will have to special-case each shortening service.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Nbradbury, thanks for the HEAD trick.  Unfortunately, it doesn't work for many services who, for example, serve the resolved page via Javascript.
