She was unconscious for more than two minutes, bleeding heavily from her nose and mouth. I didn't untangle her from her bike because it looked like she could have a neck injury. I'm glad the firemen and medics made such good time coming to help.

I commute on the Burke Gilman every day. There are plenty of more dangerous intersections that don't have the posts. Particularly near Fred Meyer, and near Gasworks. The truck drivers are very good about watching for cyclists.

I've lived in Germany also, and they would only have the staggered gates if it was a pedestrian-only path. Which the Burke Gilman is not. If you want to stroll down the middle of a path I'll suggest Green Lake as a great alternative.

Of course she should have been more careful, biking is dangerous, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't make the trail as safe as we can. I love biking and I hate seeing people get hurt.

Re: Woman seriously injured on Burke Gilman

She was wearing a helmet, but that doesn't help when you land on your face. We were both going pretty fast. She went straight over the handlebars. That was the worst wreck, not involoving a car, that I've ever seen. Those posts need to be taken out. Cars know not to drive on the Burke Gilman. The trail has too much traffic to have hazzards like that.

I hope she recovers quickly and fully.
