There were many take-always for me. On the topic of initiative, Seth asks a great question: "Who is your VP of Go? In many organizations there always seems to be a VP of No!" This message isn't just for entrepreneurs with an idea, it's for people who feel stuck or are working a stepping stone job too. For example, if there's trash in the pool area of the huge hotel you work at that maintenance is taking too long to clean up, you can be the assistant catering manager and take care of it by throwing it away so that guests don't see the mess. Don't wait for permission or for someone to tell you it's okay, just do it. Now, for entrepreneurs with ideas, he makes the point about trying new things. Seth clarified by saying that trying is not enough. You can't just apply for the new patent you have to make your widget and ship it. (Paraphrasing Seth...) Many claim (falsely) that failure is not an option. If that's the case, success is not an option either because you can't have one without the other. Make a list of well-known successful people. All of them have failed to get to the successful place in their life. Those who have never failed have never truly taken a risk or shipped anything!

There are no paper tickets so bring a print out of your online receipt and we'll match you to the guest list. VIP reception starts at 6:45pm. General reception starts at 7pm. Seth's presentation will begin at 7:45pm. I suggest you arrive a little early to account for 700 people all arriving at the same time. It's going to be a great night!

Seth's latest book Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? is a great read and very relevant for 2011 and beyond. I'm hoping to secure copies of his newest book "Poke the Box" in time for the event, but no promises as it releases the day before our event!

I hear you and understand completely that food and shelter comes before this. If you're new to Linked Orange County we're an organization of regular people working together to help each other. These events cost money--sometimes a lot of money when they are as large as this one will be. We don't charge a membership fee so we rely 100% on members and sponsors to support it.

Hopefully you can join us for one of our free events or something down the road.

Nice article Ivan. Finding a valuable community to join can be a challenge but starting your own and leading one is an entirely different animal! Sometimes the most unlikely person becomes a leader. And a long legacy of leadership or years of expertise in the area doesn’t necessarily qualify you or make you a better leader. In our life we’re probably the leader and follower at times. In fact, sometimes being a follower, though it carries a stigma, takes more courage and vision than being the one in charge.

When I first created Linked Orange County, I felt very unworthy and the least likely choice to lead. But then I realized that normal ordinary people like me are leading out in small ways everywhere by pursing their passion. There are ordinary people quietly doing extraordinary things because they want to change things for the better. And I think that’s all you need to get started is passion and a vision for something important–and the determination to do it. All the credit really belongs to the inspired people who are willing to support and follow you. They become the reason your vision is important and valuable and come into the foreground as you slip into the background.

Yep, and I think everyone does have some level of clout (trust, influence, leverage). The point is, how do we earn more--because I think it is an earned thing. You can build your brand thru generating content online (or offline), real life experiences and more. Carving out a niche to establish yourself as an expert usually = getting hired (more) or higher paying jobs.
