Wow what an exciting first week saw the UCLA @ Rice game-UCLA has improved a lot broke loose on some outstanding big plays.Rice did block 3 extra points new NCAA record. Was really surprised and happy about Texas State's first FBS game defeated the Houston Cougars in Houston- outstanding victory for the Bobcats and head coach Dennis Francione. Next week Tommie Tubberville and the Texas Tech Red Raiders travel to San Marcos to face the Bobcats.Houston finished 13-1 in 2011 and was a 31 point favorite over TSU. Houston lost a great QB Keenum and has a new H.C. Tony Levine.Kevin Sumlin former U of H head coach has moved on to Texas A&M.Too bad the A&M vs La Tech game was postponed due to bad weather both teams coming off of bowl wins in 2011,now the Aggies get to beat Florida at Kyle Field the most exciting venue in CFB. I got to see the Wyoming at Texas game. looked like the Horns got burned on a couple of deep balls early, then had a couple of picks.Texas had two running backs with over 100 yds a piece, so looks like the running game is back in Austin, however they struggled in the kicking game a blocked PAT and missed a FG.The starting kicker a PSU transfer was out with pulled groin muscles. Texas won the game 37-17 against a really good Wyoming team-look for the Cowboys to do real well in the MWC.
We were able to get back home and watch the OU @ UTEP game. Wow no offense to anybody but OU is way overrated.UTEP had them several times and lost the game.OU had a lot more depth and you could see the difference in the second half. The Miners were cramping up and getting dehydrated.The UTEP Miners missed 3 FGs and pulled a fake punt that failed.OU scored late in the 4th and the final was 24-7 the game was a lot closer than the score indicates.The Sooners will have to correct a lot before they face the gantlet of The B12.They had trouble with Mike Price and the UTEP Miners from C-USA They don't look like a top25 team to me and with WV,UT,BU,TCU,ND,KSU and OK st on their schedule they will be fortunate to make it to a bowl.
The other much anticipated game for Texas football fans was the SMU @ Baylor game. The Bears lost some players to the NFL, however Art Briles is one of the greatest coaches in the nation and has built a program that came compete against anybody. The Bears totally dominated the Mustangs and I was impressed with the linebackers Lackey and Hager. Garett Gilbert was constantly under pressure and tossed three INT's early in the game,just like he did at Texas. June Jones had a good gameplan,and they have a great running back Zac Line, but its hard to recover after 3 picks.SMU's front line struggled against the Bears who dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
Nick Florence did an outstanding job of executing the offense and the team has not dropped off at all despite losing some great players. BU will have an outstanding season-look for them to contend for the B12-The game at Morgantown looks real exciting.

Thanks Zac good breakdown-the games i'll be focused upon are UCLA@ Rice pulling for the Owls looking for an upset in Houston-I understand that A&M vs La Tech has been postponed due to bad weather at Sheveport-dissappointment is an understatement I was sure looking forward to the Bulldogs vs Aggies both bowl winning programs and A&M with new staff etc etc. Also Texas State @ Houston Dennis Francione return to the helm as the Bobcats enter FBS/ Div1A against the mighty Cougars.U of H had a great run in 2011 losing to Southern Miss. The HC and QB are gone however the Cougs are used to the big time and TSU is jumping into a red nation at Robertson Stadium.I'm also excited to see the SMU @ Baylor matchup Sunday. Art Briles and the Bears are not going to fall off much from their proven success despite losing 3 key players to NFL from last season.Nick Florence has proven himself during RGIII's injuries as a kid that can compete at a high level haven beaten Missu and TTech. SMU coming off of a great season is traveling down IH35 for an old SWC matchup.June Jones is a great coach and although this game doesn't seem to rank high on a national level-these are two great Texas teams coached by two of the best in the nation.I'm really happy with the reemergence of these two programs.

I agree with you on KU-the success of the program under Mangino shows that it can be done
however a couple of ex-pro coaches Weis and Campo will never have the opportunity-The B12 is a beast
and the Jayhawks are at the bottom of a bad-ss league.

on A&M first year will be tough-alot of Sumlin's players at U of H were Briles recruits-he stepped into a
good spot at Houston-Now A&M always does good in recruiting-they have the fans, traditions and everything in place
despite what a lot of sports writers think-they are going to surprise somebody-they might not win a league title, but
I can see them knocking off a big dog or two-they are about the same caliber as Arkansas
by injuries and lacked the deph
North Carolina- Fedora is a heck of a coach-the ACC looks like a good fit for him-a step up from C-USA might take his
program a while to take off, but looks like a good fit to me, perhaps I'm missing something

Ohio State- agreed- he won at Utah and Florida-they will do real well,however the big stage may cause health issues
for Meyer but

You asked about Hot Seat
how about Tubberville- great person and coach, however the Red Raiders are usually in a bowl and a sub 500 season
is a coach's nightmare. The B12 is a really tough league and with the addition of WV and TCU things aint going to get any easier
for TTech- I was really happy that they beat OU in Norman, then they were plagued by injuries and lacked the depth to
overcome. They have a great QB Doege and the offense can score,but the defense needs improvement'. I'd say Tubbs
is on the hot seat-TTech shoulda kept Leach the winning-est coach the program ever had. Leach probably regrets
recruiting James-who's Daddy got involved in team business.

Zac never really been a TTech fan-got a cuz that played there, however I'll pull for them if they are playing OU
It kinda sucked when Craig James { SMU}, got Leach run off. Now Leach is at Wash St ought to be fun to watch and Rich Rod
Arizona- your right I pull for Texas teams-UTEP is playing OU, so is TTech,BU,TCU and Texas so I'll have some games to watch
The Owls play in C-USA one of the smallest schools in Div I-they had great success in the 50's they knocked off the #1 A&M Aggies
when Bear Bryant was the coach-BTW the Aggs also had a Heisman winner on the team-Crow. Rice had King Hill-R.I.P. as Quarterback.
The Rice Owls located in Houston Texas used to be part of the SWC conference and still play SMU&Houston every year,Texas and TCU quite often

you got Oklahoma way too high-basically the same team that lost to Texas Tech,Baylor and OK State last year-this year they will probably lose to Texas and TCU as well- 8 win season at best

really enjoyed ESPN top 25 games-they replayed TCU @ BU and OU @ BU- Ive always pulled for Texas teams- even A&M especially if they are playing OU-

Thanks Zac I appreciate it, I'll try to check in more often as the season approaches, I've never met Ron or WEA, my budget prevents much travel, however now that A&M is in the SEC- I'll probably hook up with some fanblogs regulars in the future-I'm only a couple of hours away from A&M- Are you going to attend the WV @ UT game in Austin ? If so let me know- Your thread is not a homer thread at all and I can tell that you did a great deal of research-I dont think BU will fall off too much from last year. Briles has taken a small private school with a history of 3-9 and 4-8 seasons from a bottom dweller into a formidable opponent. The recruiting has improved and BU has the biggest offensive line in the country they average 6'5 and 312 lbs. Florence did a good job as a true freshman with Griffin was injured, now he has the line to give him the time to execute Briles brilliant offense. The big question marks for the Bears are defense and kicking game. Phil Bennet is a great coach with a lot of experience and now he's got some Jr, college transfers and freshman coming in that should improve the defense. Javonte Magee-DE-6'5 265 lbs from San Antonio was ranked at #7 recruit by rivals turned down offers from Alabama,Auburn,Michigan and Texas A&M and chose BU, he should have an immediate impact, BU also picked up U.S. Army All American Brian Nance -LB-6'2-210lbs ranked as #6 outside linebacker in the nation. The also got LB Eddie Lackey 6'-220lb Jr college transfer from California-Phil Bennet said" that he reminds me of a guy I coached at A&M named Nat Nguyen ". Brice Hager son of UT great Britt Hager at MLB a fast sophmore and they have Ahmad Dixon at the nickel spot" probably the fastest group of LB's in the B12" according to Briles. The Bears also have returning CB K.J. Morton who have 75 tackles and 4 INt's last year. We will see if these guys can slow down some of the greatest offenses in the country next year and the game at Morgantown will be a test. really looking forward to the BU @ WV matchup.

@ Gray they will be competitive, but realistically we are looking at 8-4 or 7-5 IMHO they will probably loose to Baylor, OK State and Texas- The TCU and OU games look like tossups- you never know about tTech or KSU they can beat just about anybody

I loved seeing TCU beat OU and WV beating OU- last year was wonderful we got to see scrappy little Baylor { as Jim Rome says} beat OU we also got to see Tommie Tubberville's terrible Tech Tech Red Raiders beat OU and the regular season ended with coach I'm a man Mike Gundy's OK State Cowboys beat the Sooners- Great season of college football- now I can pull for The Frogs and the Mountaineers to beat OU

I totally agree the SEC teams have always scheduled softies-Some XII teams have too-one year Texas A&M played the Cintadel-shoot one of the Largest university's playing a little bity school-these games shouldn't be played IMHO

ya Zac I have to agree-looking at XII opponents-OK state vs Savannah state,Texas Tech vs Northwestern State,TCU vs Grambling St-these type of games cannot help your team,but be detrimental towards the end of the season-last season OK State was .001 points away from playing in the MNC game-TCU beat Wisconsin and Texas Tech beat Oklahoma- some of the non conference games in the XII look really good and can only help your team- OU vs Notre Dame , Kansas State vs Miami, Texas vs Ole Miss,West Virginia vs Maryland, Baylor vs SMU,OK state vs Arizona and TCU vs Virginia these are the kind of games that fans want to see- similar to bowl match-ups and although teams rankings change every year these kind of matchups should be scheduled-we are in agreement.
